havas chicago - annex

The Summer 2018 intern cohort at Havas Chicago was tasked with hosting an event at the end of the internship program. I was responsible for designing event decor including: light fixtures, window installations, a voting booth, and an interactive graffiti wall.

Inspiration:

The Annex is an extension of Havas Chicago, a cultural epicenter for millennials, by millennials. While other agencies emulate existing culture, the Annex is the driving force in creating it.

Our inspiration for this event was born from the fact that the Chinese government put a ban on Hip-Hop within the country, calling it tasteless and obscene.

When creating an event that would bring Chicago talents together to help drive Hip-Hop within Chicago’s Chinatown, we wanted to make sure we created an experience that was authentic to Chinese culture in addition to the culture of Hip-Hop. For decor, we channeled an underground Chinese street vibe. In China, redundant street ads covered in graffiti line merchant streets in many neighborhoods. The Chinese have gotten so annoyed with these ads, that they took matters into their own hands to create something that has been previously an eyesore, into something artful. For our event, we wanted to recreate this experience for our 500+ guests.
